This gag is also a bit nerdy and pokes fun at the reported inflation numbers by governments agencies to the general public. (Actually, it pokes fun at how the indexes are composed and how they keep getting modified every year. More and more these indices weigh the important things less and less (energy, housing, food) and weigh the “less important” things more (televisions, cell phones, taxi rides).
It shouldn’t matter if you consider inflation "transitory" or permanent, the concerning point is that the government-reported inflation numbers are dishonest. "You can't handle the truth!" - Ace Ventura Pet Detective.
